The vibrant coastal town of Manavgat, nestled in the heart of Antalya, recently came alive with the start of the International Manavgat ‘From Crete to Side’ Culture and Taste Festival. Organized by the Manavgat Municipality, the festival kicked off with a lively parade from the ancient theater in Side, drawing a large crowd of locals, tourists, and shop owners alike. The procession concluded at the iconic Temple of Apollo, a site steeped in history and charm.

This unique festival aims to revive the historical and cultural ties between Manavgat and Crete, bringing together the rich culinary heritage and traditions of both regions. The event also attracted globally renowned chefs, each showcasing a diverse array of flavors inspired by the Mediterranean.

At the opening ceremony held at the Temple of Apollo, a moment of silence was observed, followed by the Turkish National Anthem. Manavgat Mayor Niyazi Nefi Kara addressed the crowd, emphasizing the fusion of Manavgat’s nature-infused gastronomy with Crete’s coastal cuisine. ‘Our goal is to blend the culinary and cultural essences of two historically connected regions and present them to the world,’ said Kara.

Highlighting the strong bond between the two cities, Kara mentioned that Manavgat and Chania, Crete, are now officially ‘sister cities.’ He also noted that Manavgat attracts nearly 7 million tourists annually, making it an ideal location to host such a cultural exchange.

Eleni Zervoudaki, Deputy Mayor of Chania, and Ioannis Giannakakis, Chania’s Deputy Culture Mayor, also spoke at the event, expressing their delight at the opportunity to share Cretan culture with the people of Manavgat.

Adding a touch of local flair, the festival featured captivating performances by the Manavgat Folk Dance Ensemble alongside the Greek Folk Dance Troupe from Crete, weaving together the rhythms and melodies of two regions separated by the sea but united by tradition.

With a lineup of culinary workshops, live performances, and exhibitions, the festival promises to be a delightful celebration of food, culture, and the shared heritage of Manavgat and Crete. Stay tuned for more highlights from this vibrant cultural exchange, where flavors and traditions from both shores come together in perfect harmony.
